The future of Translation

Machine translations are currently far from perfect. This however may change as more and more technology is being perfected. Consider the chess computers of the past.

Many people simply did not believe that a computer could think and apply strategy. It turned out, however that the computer did not have to think it merely had to perform to a certain standard with its computing power.

Although these computers that play chess are not likened to human players, they have beaten many average players in the past and even a few champions as well.

This may well be the path in the future of translation. Although computers are not readily able to translate as eloquently as humans right now, in the next few years as more and more technologies are discovered and created they may just make the grade in the long run.

Many experts are not expecting them to go so far as to translate things like songs and poetry with perfection but they are expected to produce an acceptable translation of things such as manuals using less than elegant speech.

Even so, if they are perfected to the point that they are more than understandable it will make translation much less expensive than actual human translation which may be a bad point to those who make their living this way.

Because the current software programs are highly unable to properly discern context, many believe that it will simply never happen. However, remember again the chess computers.

Skeptics had their doubts about those as well. Although automatic translation is very difficult it can be achieved by computers if the technology is brought more up to date. There will always be a place for accurate and meticulous englisch übersetzung / German Translation.

The sophistication of today’s software is not that close but who knows what may be created in the future? Once developers learn ways in which to help computers understand and properly translate in context, human translation may actually become a thing of the past.

Many engineers and linguists are currently working on solutions to the problem that computer translations are having and although it may be still a few years away, it is looking more and more like the translation of the future will rest entirely or at least mostly on computers.

If you are a translator take heart. This scenario is likely still a few years away. However, it never hurts to be safe. It may be time to hone your other skills just in case.
